Where do we start? This multitalented city has given so much proof of its creativity over the course of its history, that it’s hard to pick the symbols of its excellence in the fine arts, design and fashion. Suffice to say that Antwerp is the birthplace of the genius of Rubens, of one of the oldest (1663) and most acclaimed Academy of Fine Arts in Europe, as well as the famous Antwerp Six, a collective of fashion designers that made waves in the international fashion scene in the 1980s. After all, the Flanders started leaving their marks on fashion as of the XV century, when the famous local lace started spreading in Europe.
Besides hiding some beautiful examples of the local Art Nouveau in its architecture, our neighbourhood is home to art galleries and movie theatres with strong ties to the local community. While visiting a city that is such a beacon of imagination and creativity, taking home an original piece of art as an inspiring souvenir seems like the sensible thing to do!
